Week 4
Chapter
2
2.1
Business pressures, organisational responses, and IT support.
As
businesses grow, they have increasingly more pressure to perform and generate a
solid income and company growth. As times move on, information sharing, data generating
and consolidating become highly necessary.
2.2
Competitive advantage and strategic information systems.
Competitive
advantages are fantastic when trying to build your business. When you are competing
against other retailers of similar products, using strategic information systems
can show you how to beat your competitors. Innovation, Operational
effectiveness, Differentiation, cost leadership and customer orientation are
all ways of creating competitive advantages.
2.3
Business-IT alignment.
There
are multiple ways that you can ‘align’ your business with IT. You can:
-
View IT as an engine of innovation.
-
View their customers and their customer service as extremely
important.
-
Rotate the business and IT professionals throughout the
business.
-
Provide goals and aspirations for employees to reach.
-
Ensure that every employee understands how and why the
company does what it does.
Unfortunately,
this is not always the case with many companies and organisations not achieving
the above-mentioned strategies.

NIce post, I liked your point "when you are competing against other retailers of similar products, using strategic information systems can show you how to beat your competitors". This is a pretty cool tool that can be utilised in todays age, imagine the excessive amounts of data storage and manual calculations required in doing what we we take for granted with IS systems.

ReplyDeleteA nice, clear, and succinct post. I like how you mentioned with business-IT alignment "this is not always the case with many companies and organisations..." ReplyDeleteYour list of various ways businesses can incorporate IT alignment into their business was good. Especially the " Provide goals and aspirations for employees to reach." and "Ensure that every employee understands how and why the company does what it does."
